It’s Wednesday so it’s time for another interview with a member of the TTRPG community! Today we’ll hear from Joel Moreno, TTRPG designer, storyteller, and Producer at Take Your Role You can find them at their personal Twitter at https://twitter.com/zXShadowAceXz, or the Take Your Role official Twitter at https://twitter.com/TakeYourRole.

Let’s see what Joel has to say!

What attracted you to TTRPGs?

When I was first introduced to TTRPGs, I was at an all-time low. Had just come out of a bad relationship, had very few friends, and the concept of TTRPGs- specially the community building and cooperative storytelling elements- were very attractive to me.

What are your biggest outside influences when playing or GMing TTRPGs?

There’s a lot of things I draw from when telling stories in TTRPGs. Some of the biggest are Guardians of the Galaxy, Aliens, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Ratchet and Clank.

What is one thing you think defines a (nearly) perfect TTRPG session?

It’s hard to say what defines a perfect TTRPG session, but for me, as long as everyone is having fun, that’s all that really matters, I think. Detailed maps, fancy dice, and a complex story mean nothing if the players aren’t having fun!

If your home town was launching a new professional sports team, what D&D monster would you choose as their mascot?

Hmmm… That’s a good question, but I think I’d go with the sports team Bayamon Basilisks!

Have you ever felt like an outsider in the TTRPG space? Describe if you can.

Oh, all the time. Less so now, but it still happens. Seeing a lot of “Tag people” Tweets go viral and not get tagged once definitely deals a blow to the psyche, for example, but I’ve learned to overcome it.

Something else you’d like us to know about you:

If given the chance, I’d like to share Take Your Role’s existence with people! Take Your Role is a soon-to-start streaming platform run by POCs with the explicit goal of providing POC content creators with a place where they can tell their stories without having to fight or deal with the usual issues that they face in other APs and channels. We’ve got a LOT of games getting set up right now, ranging from things like Vampire: The Masquerade to Glitter Hearts to Bunkers and Badasses and beyond, all POC-led, with majority POC tables!

Thanks Joel! Can’t wait to see what Take Your Role has in store!
