I’ve been running a weekly 5e campaign in Monte Cook’s Ptolus setting since January 2022, the player characters are currently 16th level. It can be difficult to run a 5e game with higher level characters while keeping the game challenging and the players engaged. This campaign diary series features notes from my players and I about the challenges of playing high level 5e.

This week the PCs explored a section of a large dungeon (The Dark Reliquary). This is interesting because while I don’t think my players generally like playing “mega dungeons”, they chose to explore this section, knowing they didn’t need to do this to accomplish their larger goals.

There was only one combat in this session (our sessions are 2.5 hours weekly), five PCs against four Vargouilles, a flying demonic head – CR 1, 18 hp. It was not a challenge for the PCs, but it’s ok to have these sorts of encounters occasionally. The players worked hard to build powerful PCs, and it’s ok to let them show off once in a while.
