It’s Wednesday so it’s time for another interview with a member of the TTRPG community! Today we’ll hear from Ancient Albatross – Retail Drone and one of the creators of the Cypher Unlimited discord community. You can find him at https://www.youtube.com/cypherunlimitedor https://twitch.tv/cypherunlimitedlive or https://discord.gg/bGJ5ev6 or https://twitter.com/AncientBatross
Let’s get started!
Do you prefer playing TTRPGs online or in person, and why?
In person gaming will always be king. There’s no argument to be had here. Online has its place for actual play shows and letting people who are far away game with each other, but in person gaming will always be the best
What is your favorite video game or board game?
Oooh, this is a tough one. My favorite video game of all time has to be Chrono Trigger. Amazing music, amazing story, amazing characters, just everything is so good.
These days though, I generally enjoy difficult roguelikes. Roguelikes are easy to just dive into for a quick session without much investment, which is stellar for my attention span these days
If you created a TTRPG about anything, what would it be like?
If I could create a TTRPG about ANTYHING, I would definitely try to re-create video games I enjoy. I have a couple of incomplete projects for Cypher System that are based on video games(darkest dungeon and Stardew Valley specifically). I also really want to try my hand at creating a Magical Girl/Person setting for Cypher System.
If you created an undead creature or animal that doesn’t currently exist, what would it be?
This is a wild question! I don’t know if my imagination is good enough to create something that doesn’t exist, only variations of things that currently exist, haha. For example, an aquatic kangaroo or sentient birds that defend nature by attacking polluters.
Have you ever felt like an outsider in the TTRPG space? Describe if you can.
Honestly, I do sometimes feel like an outsider in the TTRPG space. I don’t run or play in games often at all, I haven’t been playing these games long enough to know big names in the industry or even what some of the most popular games or settings entail. This leads to a sort of imposter syndrome where I don’t feel like I’m qualified to be in the position I’m in with Cypher Unlimited. I know this is a nonsensical train of thought, but it’s definitely something I think about from time to time.
But overall, the community makes me feel super welcome and appreciated. I don’t ever actually feel like an outsider within the community, I just personally feel like an outsider some times due to my lack of experience and knowledge.
If you’re someone who is like me, just know you’re not alone. You’re still a TTRPGer and part of the community even if you don’t play much or run games often. If you have a love for this hobby, enjoy content others produce, or just like reading all the cool books, you ARE a part of this community.
Something else you’d like us to know about you:
I’m a chill dude who is always up for some chitchat! If you have something cypher or ttrpg related to discuss and need a sounding board, feel free to reach out!
Thanks!
